Mar. 14th, 2007 10:47 am4 a.m. greets me with sirens. Three loud, not emergency vehicle sirens. The first one I thought I had dreamed, but nope, it was followed with two more. And then the emergency vehicles came out in full force.
My mind was tired. I had all of an hours sleep and then the parade of sirens began down the street. For some reason the atmosphere wasn't conducive to sound carrying, so the sirens would start suddenly and stop suddenly, making me wonder if a brief portal had opened up on Main St. to allow only emergency vehicles to race through before they disappeared back to where ever they were supposed to be going to. I heard every type of siren that I could imagine for nearly an hour. I started wondering exactly how long said portal could be and began the process of coming up with a mathematical equation for it, since they kept coming and there was no way to sleep until they stopped. I also wondered, if a portal hadn't opened up on Main St, what the hell had happened that every fire truck in Montgomery County was flying down the road at 4 a.m.
So the world quiets down and I fall into nightmared sleep. At 7:30 the alarm goes off and I mutter, groan, and roll over. Don't need to be up quite yet, doctors appointment isn't until 9:30.
I finally get up, shower, dress, and go to check the news. Yup, 4-alarm fire less than a mile down the street, called in all the local township fire trucks, the other towns, the volunteers, the police, and everyone's brother. Had my mother been here, she would have been at the scene. Lans-bowl, the local bowling alley/bar, is no more.
A number of the local schools are closed, because they closed Main St. I feel bad for the people that use that section of road to commute, because for about two miles it's close down altogether, even local traffic is having a hard time getting through.
I still think the idea of a random portal opening up on Main St to allow emergency vehicles from around the world through for a half mile was a more interesting idea than a 4-alarm fire at the bowling alley, but reality thankfully does not bend to the whims of my mind.
